FOOTSTEPS: The Staircases of San Francisco
2000 - 2001
Growing up in the Midwest and Florida, the terrain was extremely flat. So when I moved to San Francisco I was understandably taken by the hills, incredible vistas and overall beauty of the city and its surrounding areas. Each day I would set out on foot to explore new areas and different neighborhoods — all the while searching for a surprising and unexpected way to document one of the most photographed cities in the world. I discovered the answer was literally right under my feet. There are over 350 staircases around San Francisco. The more of them I encountered, the more I realized that these stairs were quite often just as interesting as the views from the winding streets. This revelation led me to this series of photographs and provides a unique perspective on one of the world's most beautiful cities. Although we are busily going about our day-to-day lives and heading from one place to another, sometimes it is worth it to stop and take a look around and appreciate what is right in plain sight.
